Squad History
In 1973 it was decided to start a Rescue Squad. 55 members, some from each company trained for a full year before they were considered capable of being in the Rescue Squad. They took classes in first aid, CPR, extrication techniques, use of ropes and knots, etc… The Village bought miscellaneous pieces of equipment for these members to be able to complete their rescues. They purchased Porto-Powers, K-12 saws, air Chisels, and the Jaws of Life.
It was determined early on that the Rescue Squad was too overcrowded, and over a period of time this group was slimmed down to an elite group of 30 members.
Today our squad can boast some of the finest equipment; such as the latest hydraulic powered Jaws of Life. The Rescue Squad rolls up on calls today in state of the art rescue vehicles such as 7-3-19, a truck that is equipped with all the teams needed to get the job done. The truck can run two hydraulic tools off of its pre-connected hydraulic reels; it can also run two additional tools off of it portable hydraulic unit. Add many electric and gas powered tools and enough light to light up the night like day. We also respond with a Mini-Pumper 7-3-34 which not only carries water and foam for protection but its own complement of Jaws of Life. Another piece of equipment is 7-3-12 a class A pumper which serves to transport personnel and protect the members with hose lines while they are operating on a rescue scene. The last pieces of equipment we utilize are 7-3-6 and 7-3-7 which are used to direct some of the worst traffic seen on the island during the summer months. The members still hold a meeting and drill the last Wednesday of every month, keeping themselves on the cutting edge of technology and up to date with new rescuing techniques.
