About the Department
The Southampton Fire Department provides fire protection and rescue services to the residents, business owners, and visitors of the Village of Southampton as well as the outlaying district including Water Mill, Tuckahoe, and Shinnecock Hills. The department has a compliment of 145 firefighters , 4 stations, 24 pieces of apparatus, and a separate junior squad. The department also has three specialized squads which provide surface water rescue, heavy rescue, and rapid intervention. Southampton Fire responds to approximately 1100 calls each year ranging from automatic fire alarms, structure fires, and rescue calls. The department does not employ any paid staff and relies entirely on the volunteer force for all aspects of operation.
Emergency Medical Services for the Village and outlying district are provided by the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance and the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance respectively. SFD firefighters are trained in BLS CPR and First Aid with some firefighters being trained to the BLS and ALS levels. Each year the department sends firefighters around the country for training and further education.
Our firefighters must annually maintain skills and certifications as required by federal and local standards for firefighters. In addition to the many hours on call, training and certification courses add thousands of man hours to the commitment each year.
